The ultimate purpose of ICE-ASI is to deepen global understanding of individuals with hidden challenges that interfere with mastering daily life and participating in meaningful occupations at any stage of life - such as sensory integration difficulties. These individuals are often misunderstood, misinterpreted, or remain undiagnosed.
Dr. A. Jean Ayres developed a perspective of people's behaviors that look beyond the visible behavior, called Sensory Integration, today known as Ayres Sensory Integration (ASI®). It explains and addresses the underlying sensory challenges through a theory and an intervention approach grounded in neuroscience, psychology / behavioral science, developmental psychology, Occupational Science/Occupational Therapy, Systems Theory, Learning Sciences, and Motor Control and Motor Learning Theories.
The International Council for Education in Ayres Sensory Integration (ICE-ASI) was founded to promote best practices in identifying and supporting individuals affected by these underlying difficulties in sensory processing and integration that represent the integrity of Ayres’ body of work. ICE-ASI aims at ensuring access to valid, objective, and fidelity-based information, education, and research in ASI® worldwide.
Standards for education in ASI® were developed as a result of SI organizations' critical concern about how to maintain the integrity of the body of work of Dr Ayres' SI, and how to support best practice in occupational therapy using ASi. The pathways supports therapists worldwide in building the expertise needed to provide ASI with fidelity, effectiveness, and integrity, as well as organizations that offer or are developing an ASI certificate program.
ICE-ASI's Minimal Standards for Education in ASI® are currently under review and a modern competency and practice-based framework will be published after it has been approved by the ICE-ASI Council. This is expected to happen in 2025.
ICE-ASI member organizations are eligible to have their ASI certificate programs accredited. Currently, four programs are accredited by ICE-ASI that are taught in over 40 countries worldwide.
From guidelines on how to develop a substantial Mission Statement for your organization to support for organizations that want to develop local ASI instructors or their own ASI certificate program - we are here to support our member organizations.
We will show you the pathway to expertise as a therapist applying ASI principles in your work.
Currently, the pathway is under review. Until the new framework is ready to be published, check out the old pathway from 2017!
